Special Events
At the Eliot school, the physical education department features several special events designed to encourage students to value physical activity and demonstrate their skills. These events include the Annual Pumpkin Run, K-2 Fairytale Fitness, our 3rd Grade Bike Rodeo, Gymnastics Peek Week, Jump Rope for Heart and Field Day. Some events welcome parent volunteers, participation or observation of a class performance.
Eliot Pumpkin Fun RunEach Fall, we host a fun run/walk around the playground space as a family fitness activity. Every participant will walk, run or jog as many laps as they want. Each lap measures a 1/4 mile. Upon completion of a lap, each participant receives a popsicle stick which helps them keep track of their total distance covered. For example, if you get 4 popsicle sticks, you've covered 1 mile. At the end of their activity time these are placed in bucket to be counted by our fifth grade students. The total sticks counted will give us a distance travelled as a school. In year's past, we have completed over 350 miles or 1,400 popsicle sticks placed in the bucket. Each year we try to beat the school record.

Fairy Tale FitnessStudents in K-2 get a chance to act out some of their favorite fairy tales in the gymnasium as part of a fun family event hosted in the Eliot gymnasium. Stories such as Billy Goats Gruff, Rapunzel, Mafuro's Beautiful Daughters, Jack and the Beanstalk, Three Little Pigs, Humpty Dumpty. Our media specialist will read some of these stories during their media time so all students are familiar with the tales.
It is an annual tradition that 5th graders, with the assistance of parent volunteers, work the station activities for the students in grades K-2. Its a great way to pay it forward seeing as many of our students participated in this event when they are younger. This encourages leadership, responsibility and acting as a role model for the younger students. |
Field DayEach Spring we hold our annual Field Day for students in grades 1-5. This event provides our students with the opportunity to try a variety of fun activities that promote health and fitness, focus on active participation rather than on winning, and apply the skills they leaned in their physical education classes throughout the year.
Parent volunteers are needed to host this event. Please look for information coming home with the students sometime in the spring to sign-up. |
Jump Rope for HeartThe Eliot School participates annually in the Jump Rope for Heart program which benefits the American Heart Association and teaches students about the importance of maintaining a healthy heart. We held our event on Friday, February 17th, 2017 as a school wide event.
In 2016, we raised $3,314.35 which is the largest amount since 2007. Since our first year, we are proud to have raised over $11,388 for the American Heart Association. We dedicated the event to Travis Caruso who lost his battle with heart disease. Travis' mom, Paige, was a recess staff member here at the Eliot school and also worked for NEDP. We were honored to have Paige join us for the event. All students in the school participated in the fun filled event featuring single ropes, long ropes and even some double dutch! |
Gymnastics Peek WeekAt the conclusion of our gymnastics unit, our students in grades K-2 perform a gymnastics sentence for a parent/guardian filled audience. The sentences are a nice way for students to perform a variety of connected gymnastics skills showcasing their own skills and abilities.

3rd Grade Bike Rodeo2017-18 Bike Rodeo Flyer (click below)
Each 3rd grade student participates in our annual bicycle safety program. Students are asked to bring in their two wheeled bicycle and helmet to showcase their ability to ride safely. Students are asked to demonstrate the ability to start/stop their bike safely, understand the hand signals and perform right and left turns while moving on their bicycle.
Each student gets hands-on safety tips, bicycle maintenance and review the rules of road to ensure they can safely operate their bike. After completion of the 3rd grade program, students (with parent permission) are allowed to go to and from school on the bicycle. It is strongly encourage that parents ride with their child a few times to ensure students know the safest route to and from school. |
